Frequently asked questions

The straight answers — about deadstock, minimums, sourcing, and shipping. Anything else, call or text (310) 622-2830 and ask a person.

About the fabric

What is deadstock fabric?

Unused overstock from mills and designers — fabric woven for real production runs that was never sewn. Same quality as finished garments, at a fraction of retail because it's leftover. The quantity is finite: when a roll is gone, it's gone. More in how deadstock sourcing works.

How do you verify fiber content and weight?

Every roll is checked in person before it's listed — fiber, weight, and hand-feel verified by touch, and burn-tested when a label is missing or doubtful. The specs on a listing are what's actually on the roll.

How do the fabric photos work?

Photos are representative samples of the fabric types and quality we source. Every roll is checked in person before it’s listed, and we photograph fresh stock as it lands — call or text us for current photos of the roll your order is cut from.

Can I get the same fabric again later?

While the roll lasts, yes. Deadstock can't be re-ordered once it sells through — ask how much is left before building a product or production run around a fabric, and we'll count it and tell you straight.

What does fabric width mean for my project?

Yardage is measured along the roll, and every fabric has a fixed width — ours run from about 44 to 58 inches depending on the bolt, and each listing states it. Width decides how much you actually get: a 58-inch fabric covers far more pattern pieces per yard than a 44-inch one, and wide goods mean fewer seams. Check the width on the listing before you calculate yardage — or ask us and we'll do the math with you.

What is a dye lot — and why should I care?

A dye lot is one batch of fabric dyed at one time. Everything on a single roll shares a lot, so yardage cut from the same roll matches perfectly. Across different rolls — even of the "same" fabric — shade can shift slightly. If your project needs yardage to match, order it all at once from one roll and tell us it's one project; we'll never mix rolls in a single cut without asking first.

Will my fabric shrink?

Natural fibers relax in the wash: cotton and linen commonly shrink about 3–5% on the first wash, sometimes a touch more; wool shrinks less, and most synthetics barely move. If your finished piece will be washed, pre-wash the fabric the same way — or size your pattern with the shrinkage in mind — and buy a little extra yardage to cover it. Our guide to how fabric is made covers allowances in detail.

How much extra should I buy for cutting loss?

Professionals add a cutting allowance on top of a pattern's yardage: about 5% for simple layouts on plain fabric, up to 10% when you're matching prints, stripes, or a one-way nap. It's cheaper to fold leftover fabric into your next project than to come up one sleeve short — and with deadstock, the roll may not be here when you come back for more.

Ordering & minimums

How does ordering work?

Browse the shop, then call, text, or WhatsApp with the fabric and yardage. We cut it continuous from the real roll and ship it — or arrange LA pickup. No online checkout: every order starts a real conversation so you get the right fabric.

Is there a minimum order?

No bulk minimum. By the yard means by the yard — 1 yard to sample, or a full run's worth. Multiple yards are always cut as one continuous piece.

How much does fabric cost?

Per-yard prices are listed on each fabric — currently $5–$12/yard from cotton prints to silk charmeuse — and the more you buy, the cheaper it gets: 10+ yards saves 5%, 50+ saves 10%, 100+ saves 15% — typically well below retail for comparable quality. Custom sourcing is quoted per request before we buy anything.

Do you ship outside Los Angeles?

Yes — anywhere in the US. Local pickup in Los Angeles can also be arranged.

How is my yardage shipped — rolled or folded?

It depends on the cut. Small cuts are folded neatly and shipped flat; multi-yard cuts are rolled on a tube so the fabric arrives smooth and crease-free. Whole rolls ship as rolls. How yours will travel is part of your quote confirmation — see Shipping & what to expect for the full picture.

What arrives in the package?

Your fabric, cut continuous from the roll in the yardage you ordered, with a note identifying it — fabric name, fiber content, weight, and yardage — plus your order paperwork. Unroll it when it arrives and give it a look; every cut is measured and checked by hand here before it leaves the district.

Can I buy a whole roll?

Yes — whole rolls are welcome, and they price better than by-the-yard: the automatic volume tiers already reach 15% off at 100+ yards, and a full roll can do better still. Rolls ship as rolls, and freight for a full roll is arranged and confirmed in your quote before you commit to anything.

Custom sourcing

Can you find a specific fabric for me?

Yes — that's our custom sourcing service. Fiber, weight, color or print, and yardage is all we need. We hunt the district, send photos and a quote, and buy nothing until you approve. No fee to request; if we can't find it, you owe nothing.

How long does sourcing take?

Usually 2–5 business days to find and quote. Rare or very specific requests can take longer — we'll tell you honestly up front.

Do you offer volume discounts?

Yes — the more you buy, the cheaper it gets. Per-yard prices drop by tier on every fabric: 10+ yards saves 5%, 50+ yards saves 10%, and 100+ yards saves 15% off the list price. Whole rolls price even better. See the full tier table on the shop page.

Do you work with businesses?

Yes — indie designers, Etsy sellers, costume shops, theater companies, and small brands are our core customers. Volume pricing is available on larger yardage.
